You resized your photo to exactly 2000 x 2000 pixels, put it on a pure white background, saved it as a JPEG under 5MB, and Amazon still flagged the listing. The dimensions were never the problem. The problem was how much of that 2000 x 2000 canvas your product actually occupied.
Frame fill, also called the fill ratio or the padding rule, is one of the least understood image requirements in e-commerce, and one of the few that marketplaces check automatically. Get it wrong in one direction and your listing is suppressed. Get it wrong in the other and your product gets cropped by an algorithm you never see. This guide covers what each marketplace actually requires in 2026, how the percentage is measured, and how to hit the number reliably across a whole catalogue.
Why frame fill is a compliance rule, not a styling preference
Marketplace search results are a grid of small thumbnails. On a phone, a product tile is often rendered at around 150 to 200 pixels wide. If your product occupies only half its frame, the shopper sees a tiny object surrounded by emptiness, sitting next to competitors whose products fill the tile edge to edge. You lose the tap before anyone reads your title.
That is the commercial reason. The compliance reason is more mechanical: Amazon, Walmart, Temu and others run automated pixel analysis on main images. These systems evaluate ratios, not visual impression. If the measurement returns 82% against an 85% threshold, the image is non-compliant no matter how professional it looks to a human reviewer.
The opposite error is less obvious. Google Shopping applies automatic image optimisation and cropping to feed images. A product that fills more than about 90% of the frame risks having its edges clipped in some placements, which is how sellers end up with a shoe missing its heel in a Performance Max ad.

The practical takeaway from that table: if you build every main image to roughly 85 to 88% fill, you satisfy Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Lazada, TikTok Shop and Shopee with a single master file, and you stay inside Google's 75 to 90% band. That one number does most of the work.
How fill percentage is actually measured
This is where most sellers go wrong, because "85% of the frame" sounds like it means 85% of the image area. It does not, and it cannot.
Consider a slim water bottle, 900 pixels wide and 1700 pixels tall, sitting on a 2000 x 2000 canvas. Its area is 1,530,000 pixels out of 4,000,000, which is 38% of the image area. By an area reading, no bottle on a square canvas could ever pass. By the reading marketplaces actually apply, the bottle's longest side spans 1700 of 2000 pixels, which is 85%, and it passes.
So the working definition is: draw the tightest rectangle around your product, then measure that rectangle's longest side against the matching side of the canvas. Lazada states this explicitly. Amazon's automated check behaves consistently with it.
The shortest-dimension trap
There is a real trap hiding in the other direction. If your product is landscape and your canvas is square, the vertical measurement is what limits you. A laptop photographed at 1800 x 700 pixels on a 2000 x 2000 canvas fills 90% horizontally but only 35% vertically. Because the product is genuinely wider than it is tall, that is expected and acceptable. But if you photographed a roughly square product and it lands at 1700 wide by 1100 tall, you are at 55% on the vertical, and you have simply left too much space above and below. Check both axes, and make sure the smaller number is explained by the product's real proportions rather than by lazy framing.
The maths for setting padding
Work backwards from the canvas. On a 2000 x 2000 target at 88% fill, the product's longest side should be 1760 pixels. That leaves 240 pixels of total margin, or 120 pixels of clear space on each side of the longest axis. On an 800 x 800 TikTok Shop image at the same ratio, the longest side is 704 pixels with 48 pixels of margin per side.
Expressed as a rule of thumb: aim for 6% clear margin on each side of the product's longest dimension. That produces 88% fill, which is comfortably above every minimum and safely below Google's crop threshold.
The aspect ratio trap when you republish across channels
Padding is not a one-time decision, because the same product has to sit on different canvas shapes. A square 1:1 file for Amazon, a 3:4 portrait for Shopee's newer layouts, a 1:1.44 portrait for Zalando, a 4:5 for Meta catalogue placements.
If you take a correctly padded square image and stretch it to portrait, you distort the product, which is a separate policy violation on most platforms. If you letterbox it by adding white bars top and bottom, the fill ratio collapses, because the canvas grew while the product did not. Five padding mistakes that cost impressions
- Uploading the camera file untouched. A phone photo of a small item on a white sheet typically lands at 40 to 55% fill. It will pass a human glance and fail an automated check.
- Cropping so tight the product touches the edge. Zero margin looks cramped in a grid, breaks Google's crop tolerance, and leaves nothing for platforms that add their own rounded corners.
- Uneven margins. Centring matters. A product sitting 40 pixels from the left and 200 from the right reads as sloppy and is visible instantly when your catalogue is viewed as a grid.
- Inconsistent fill across a catalogue. If one product sits at 85% and the next at 60%, your storefront looks like it was built by three different people. Consistency is the single cheapest trust signal you have.
- Padding with off-white. Adding margin in RGB 250,250,250 rather than 255,255,255 will fail Amazon, Walmart and Temu background validation even though the fill ratio is perfect.
