You can own a perfect white sweep, two softboxes and a tripod, and still produce product photos that look subtly wrong. Boxes that bulge. Bottles with fat shoulders. Shoes where the toe looks enormous and the heel disappears. Nine times out of ten the problem is not lighting or editing. It is the focal length you shot at, and how close you stood.
This is the least-discussed variable in e-commerce photography and one of the easiest to fix, because fixing it usually costs nothing.
The uncomfortable truth: distortion comes from distance, not the lens
Photographers say "wide lenses distort". Strictly, they do not. Perspective is determined entirely by where the camera is. A wide lens simply forces you to stand close to fill the frame, and standing close is what stretches the near parts of your product relative to the far parts.
The maths is simple enough to do in your head. Imagine a 30cm-deep shoebox photographed at a three-quarter angle:
- Camera 50cm away. The front face is 50cm from the lens, the back face roughly 80cm. The back is 80/50 = 1.6 times further, so it renders at about 62% the size of the front. The box looks like it is lunging at the viewer.
- Camera 200cm away. Front at 200cm, back at 230cm. The back renders at about 87% of the front. The box looks like a box.
Same product, same lighting, completely different credibility. Customers cannot articulate what is wrong, but they register it as "cheap photo" and scroll on. This is also why returns rise on listings shot too close: the buyer's mental model of the shape does not match the parcel that arrives.
The focal length ladder for e-commerce
All figures below are full-frame equivalent. See the crop-factor section if you shoot APS-C or Micro Four Thirds.

If you buy one lens for a product catalogue, buy a 100mm or 105mm macro. It is the only focal length that covers a ring and a kettle without changing lenses, and it is long enough that perspective is essentially honest. Minimum focus distance is typically 26-30cm measured from the sensor plane, which leaves roughly 10-15cm of clear air in front of the lens at life-size magnification, enough to get a light in.
Crop sensors: do the multiplication before you buy
Focal length is a property of the lens, but the field of view depends on sensor size. Multiply by the crop factor to get the equivalent:
- APS-C (Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm): 1.5x. A 60mm macro behaves like 90mm. A 35mm behaves like 52mm.
- Canon APS-C: 1.6x. A 50mm behaves like 80mm, which is genuinely useful for products.
- Micro Four Thirds: 2x. A 45mm macro behaves like 90mm; a 60mm macro like 120mm.
This is good news for crop-sensor owners. The cheap, light, older lenses become excellent product lenses on a smaller sensor, and you get more depth of field at the same aperture into the bargain.
Barrel distortion is a different problem entirely
Do not confuse perspective distortion with optical distortion, which is a flaw in the lens design:
- Barrel distortion bows straight lines outwards. Common on wide zooms and almost every phone ultra-wide camera.
- Pincushion distortion pinches straight lines inwards. Common at the long end of telephoto zooms.
Optical distortion is correctable in software; perspective distortion is not. Most raw converters apply a lens profile automatically, but if you shoot JPEG on a zoom, check that in-camera lens correction is switched on. The tell-tale sign is a product box whose top edge curves gently upward at the corners, invisible on white until you place your image next to a competitor's. Primes have less of both problems, which is another reason a single 100mm macro outperforms a kit zoom for catalogue work.
Focal length also decides how much backdrop you need
There is a practical, money-saving consequence nobody mentions. The width of scene a lens sees is roughly the sensor width multiplied by distance divided by focal length. On a full-frame body (36mm sensor width):
- 100mm at 1m: sees about 36cm of backdrop. An A2 sheet of white card is enough.
- 50mm at 1m: sees about 72cm. You now need a proper sweep.
- 24mm at 0.5m: sees about 75cm, and sees it from a low angle, so you also need backdrop height and you will catch the edges of your table.
Longer lens, smaller backdrop, bigger room. If you shoot on a kitchen table, a 100mm lens and two steps backwards will save you buying a larger sweep.
Phone lenses: which one to actually tap
Modern phones offer several focal lengths, and the default one is the worst choice for products. An iPhone 17 Pro covers a 13mm ultra-wide, a 24mm main camera, a 48mm 2x crop of the main sensor, a 100mm telephoto and a 200mm 8x optical-quality crop. Android flagships follow a similar pattern. For product photography:
- Use 2x (roughly 48mm) as your minimum. On phones with a 48MP main sensor, the 2x setting is a centre crop of the full-resolution sensor, so image quality is close to native and perspective is far better than the 1x wide.
- Use the dedicated telephoto (4x / 100mm) for rigid, boxy products if you have enough light. This is where phone product photos start to look like camera photos.
- Avoid 1x for anything rectangular. A 24mm lens held 40cm from a box is the exact recipe for the bulging look described above.
- Be careful with macro mode. On most phones, macro switches automatically to the ultra-wide camera, which is the widest and most barrel-distorted lens in the stack. It is fine for texture and fabric weave; it is poor for small boxes, labels and anything with straight edges.
The single highest-return change most small sellers can make is to switch to 2x and take three steps back. It costs nothing and it works on a phone bought five years ago.
Keep focal length consistent across the catalogue
Mixing focal lengths across a product range breaks visual consistency even when every individual photo is fine. A 35mm shot and a 100mm shot of the same mug sit side by side in a collection grid looking like two different mugs. Pick one focal length per category, note it in your shot list, and lock your camera-to-product distance with a floor mark rather than eyeballing it. Consistent distance plus consistent focal length gives consistent product size in frame across restocks and new variants.
Shooting long changes how you crop
Longer lenses mean you frame looser and crop later, because you rarely have room to step forward. That is fine, provided you shoot with enough resolution to survive it. Amazon requires the product to fill at least 85% of the frame on the main image, on pure white RGB 255,255,255, with a minimum of 1,000 pixels on the longest side to activate zoom and 2,000 pixels or more recommended. Shopee, Lazada and most Southeast Asian marketplaces want square 1:1 crops. A generous in-camera frame gives you the freedom to hit all of those from one file.
Do the geometry in software rather than in the viewfinder: crop to the aspect ratio each channel needs, then resize to the exact pixel dimensions. Checklist before your next shoot
- Choose a focal length of 85mm or longer (full-frame equivalent) for any product with straight edges.
- On a crop body, multiply by 1.5, 1.6 or 2.0 to check what you have actually got.
- On a phone, tap 2x as a minimum and the dedicated telephoto where light allows.
- Stand back until the product fills the frame naturally; never fill the frame by walking closer with a wide lens.
- Switch on in-camera lens correction, or apply the lens profile in your raw converter.
- Skip phone macro mode for boxes, labels and packaging; it uses the ultra-wide lens.
- Mark the tripod and product positions on the floor so distance stays identical across the range.
- Shoot loose at high resolution, then crop and resize to each marketplace's spec in a batch tool.
- Check one finished image against a competitor's listing at thumbnail size before shooting the other 99 SKUs.
Perspective is one of the few things in product photography you cannot repair afterwards. Retouching fixes dust, colour and background; it cannot move the camera. Get the distance right in the first ten minutes and every step downstream gets easier.
