Selling automotive parts online is not like selling a candle or a t-shirt. Nobody buys a control arm because it looks pretty. They buy it because they are 90 per cent sure it fits their car, and your photos are what close the last 10 per cent. Get the images wrong and you do not just lose the sale, you win a return, a chargeback and a one-star review that says "did not fit".

Around 55 per cent of shoppers say they rely heavily on product visuals when buying car parts online, and that number climbs for appearance parts where finish and fit matter. This guide covers how to shoot parts and accessories properly, what each marketplace expects technically, and the specific shots that kill "is this the right part?" messages before they arrive.

What auto parts buyers are actually looking for

A buyer scanning your gallery is running a mental checklist that has almost nothing to do with aesthetics:

Every shot you take should answer one of those five questions. If a photo does not answer one, it is filler.

Marketplace image specifications for parts listings

Parts categories mostly follow the general marketplace rules, with one important twist: eBay Motors expects a higher minimum than standard eBay listings, because buyers need to zoom in on machined surfaces and stamped numbers.

The practical answer is to shoot once at high resolution and export downwards. A 2400 px master file feeds every one of those targets. Anything you shoot at 800 px can never be pushed back up.

Lighting: the problem with metal, chrome and black plastic

Auto parts are an awkward combination of surfaces. A single alternator can contain raw aluminium, painted steel, black rubber and a shiny connector, all reflecting differently under the same light.

Use big, soft, diffused light

Hard light on bare metal produces blown-out hotspots that hide machining detail. Two softboxes, or two windows with white diffusion, at 45 degrees either side of the part will flatten most reflections. For small parts, a light tent works well and costs very little.

Kill the reflections you cannot diffuse

Chrome and polished aluminium mirror everything in the room, including you. Shoot through a hole cut in a large sheet of white card, or use a polarising filter to cut the worst of the glare. Move reflective clutter out of the room before you blame the camera.

Black plastic needs edge separation

Black trim, ducting and engine covers disappear against a white background as an undefined silhouette. Add a subtle rim light, or a large grey card just outside the frame, to give the edges definition. You can also drop gallery shots to a light grey background (around RGB 240) while keeping the main image pure white where the marketplace demands it.

Keep the aperture tight

Parts have depth. Shoot at f/8 to f/13 so the mounting flange at the back is as sharp as the face at the front, and use a tripod so you can drop to ISO 100 and stop worrying about shutter speed.

Build a repeatable sequence and run every SKU through it. Consistency matters far more than creativity in this category.

  1. Main image on white. Three-quarter angle so the buyer reads the shape instantly. No text, no logos overlaid, no props.
  2. Front, flat on. The mating face, straight on, so bolt patterns are measurable.
  3. Rear, flat on. Where the mounting brackets and hidden connectors live.
  4. Both side profiles. Shows depth and offset, which is exactly where lookalike parts differ.
  5. Part number macro. A tight, sharp crop of the stamped or printed number. This is the single most valuable image in an auto parts listing.
  6. Connector and thread close-up. Pin count, plug shape, thread pitch.
  7. Scale reference. A ruler or tape measure alongside the part, or a dimensioned overlay in a gallery slot.
  8. What's in the box. Every gasket, bolt and clip laid out flat. This one shot is reported to cut customer service contacts by roughly 30 per cent, because it answers the "do I need to buy hardware separately?" question before it is asked.
  9. Installed context. The part fitted to an actual vehicle from your fitment list. Buyers trust an installed photo more than any amount of description copy.

Used and remanufactured parts

Photograph the damage. Scratches, surface rust, worn splines, chipped paint. It feels counter-intuitive, but disclosed wear converts better than hidden wear, because the buyer's expectations are set before delivery. Marketplaces also treat stock photos on used or damaged items as a policy breach, so you must shoot the actual unit you are shipping.

Clean the part first. Degrease it, wipe off the workshop dust and blow the lint away before the shutter fires. Grime reads as "abandoned in a shed" even when the part is mechanically perfect.

Fitment graphics: allowed, but not on the main image

Compatibility charts, year-make-model tables and installation diagrams are enormously useful, and they belong in your gallery rather than your hero slot. Amazon, eBay and Google Shopping all prohibit added text, borders, badges and watermarks on the main image, and eBay's picture policy is explicit that promotional overlays are not permitted.

Put the structured fitment data into the marketplace's own compatibility field as well. On eBay Motors, fitment is proper structured data covering year, make, model, trim and engine, and listings that use it see higher conversion and fewer return requests. The graphic reinforces that data, it does not replace it.

Scaling this across a large catalogue

Parts sellers rarely have 20 SKUs. They have 2,000, and the same part often needs to appear as a 1600 px Amazon square, a 2400 px eBay Motors JPEG, a 1000 px Shopee square and an 800 px feed image for Google Shopping. Doing that by hand is where the workflow collapses.

Shoot everything into a single master resolution, then batch out the marketplace variants in one pass. Auto parts photography is not about making the part look beautiful. It is about removing doubt. Every image that removes one more reason to hesitate is worth more than any amount of styling, and the sellers who win this category are the ones whose galleries answer the question before the buyer has to ask it.
