Selling packaged food, drinks, household goods or personal care online is a different discipline from selling a T-shirt. Grocery buyers are not browsing for inspiration — they are restocking. They scan a grid of thumbnails at speed, looking for a brand they recognise, a pack size they trust, and a label they can read. If your image fails any of those three tests in half a second, they scroll past to the competitor whose pack is legible.
Grocery and FMCG channels also enforce stricter image rules than general marketplaces, because their catalogues feed shelf planograms, substitution algorithms and legally required label information. Why grocery image rules are stricter than general marketplace rules
Three forces drive the extra strictness:

3. Informational images
Close-ups of the barcode, ingredient list, nutrition panel and any regulated claims. These are the images that satisfy label-disclosure requirements, and they are the ones sellers most often skip.
GS1 file naming is also prescribed: the filename begins with the product's 14-digit GTIN, followed by a view indicator after the first full stop. The practical read on that table: a 1:1 image at 1,600 x 1,600 px on pure white, saved as a JPEG under 1 MB, satisfies every mainstream grocery channel at once and still downsizes cleanly to Instacart's 1,000 px recommendation or a 900 px planogram export. Instacart's 85% rule is the one that catches sellers out
Instacart is unusually explicit, and its requirements are worth treating as the strictest common denominator. It wants a square image, pure white background, product filling 85% of the frame, the full product in frame without touching the edges, crisp focus, accurate colour, and — critically — brand, product name and pack size all clearly legible. It rejects images with extra text, decorations, props or additional graphics around the product.
That last point trips up FMCG sellers constantly. The "Now 30% More!" flash you added in an editor is not part of the physical pack, so it reads as promotional overlay and gets rejected. If the claim is printed on the packaging itself, it is fine. If you added it afterwards, it is not.
The label images you must not skip
For food, beverages and supplements, the back of the pack is not optional content. Marketplaces increasingly require that clear, legible images of complete label information are available to shoppers — ingredients, nutrition panel, allergen statements and manufacturer details — excluding volatile data such as batch numbers and expiry dates. Supplement and nutrition categories are stricter again, often expecting every side of the label to be visible along with a clean shot of the supplement facts panel and ingredient list.
