You have found the perfect product shot, dropped it into your listing, and the preview looks like it was photographed through a shower screen. Edges are mushy, text on the packaging is unreadable, and zooming in makes it worse. Before you reach for an AI upscaler and hope for the best, it is worth understanding what actually went wrong, because four very different problems all look like "blurry" at a glance, and only two of them can be repaired in software.
This guide covers how to diagnose the real cause, what upscaling can and cannot recover, the resolution thresholds that matter on each marketplace, and the point at which a reshoot is genuinely cheaper than another hour of editing.
Why soft images cost more than they look
A blurry hero image damages sales in three separate places. It reduces click-through from search results, where your thumbnail competes against a grid of sharp rivals. It reduces conversion on the listing page, because shoppers who cannot inspect stitching, texture or finish assume the worst. And it increases returns, because buyers form an impression from an image that never showed them what they were actually getting.
There is also a hard mechanical cost. Amazon only enables its zoom feature when the longest side reaches 1,000 pixels, and recommends 1,600 pixels or more for a sharp zoom experience. A listing below that threshold does not just look worse, it loses a feature that competitors have.
Step one: diagnose before you edit
Open the image at 100 per cent zoom, not fit-to-screen. Fit-to-screen hides almost every fault you are trying to find. Then look for these four signatures.
Soft focus
The whole image, or one plane of it, is uniformly gentle. Nothing is crisp anywhere, but there are no hard artefacts and no visible blocks. Usually caused by missed focus, a dirty lens, or shooting closer than the lens minimum focus distance. Mild cases respond well to sharpening. Severe cases do not: detail that never hit the sensor cannot be invented reliably.
Motion blur
Detail smears in one direction. Highlights stretch into short streaks. This comes from a slow shutter speed handheld, or the product moving. Directional blur is the hardest of the four to fix convincingly, and almost always warrants a reshoot with the camera on a tripod or a support.
Insufficient resolution
The image is sharp but small, and enlarging it produces soft, stair-stepped edges. A 600 x 600 px supplier image forced into a 2,000 px slot will always look like this. This is the one case where upscaling genuinely helps.
Compression damage
You see 8 x 8 pixel blocks in smooth gradients, coloured fringing around high-contrast edges, and banding in backgrounds. This is a JPEG that has been saved, resaved and resized too many times, often by a marketplace app or a messaging app. Every additional save compounds it.
Resolution thresholds that actually matter
Before deciding whether an image needs rescuing, check whether it is genuinely too small for where it is going. These are the figures worth designing your workflow around.

Note the pattern. Almost every platform tops out its useful quality somewhere between 1,600 and 3,000 pixels on the longest side. If your master file is 2,400 px and sharp, you do not have a resolution problem, and no upscaler will improve your listing. Resize down cleanly instead. What upscaling can and cannot do
Modern AI upscalers do not stretch pixels. They predict plausible detail based on training data. That distinction explains both their strength and their failure mode.
Upscaling works well for: clean, sharp images that are simply too small; regular textures like fabric weave, knurling or moulded plastic; and geometric edges that the model can extend confidently.
Upscaling works badly for: small text on packaging, which frequently comes back as convincing gibberish; fine jewellery detail and engraving; logos and trademarks, where invented detail creates a genuine compliance problem; faces on models; and anything already damaged by motion blur or heavy compression.
Two rules save most of the trouble. First, clean before you enlarge. Compression artefacts and sensor noise get amplified and baked in permanently if you upscale first. Second, do not stack passes. Running an image through two or three rounds of upscaling compounds artefacts rather than improving anything, so do one pass at your target factor.
Be conservative with the factor as well. A 2x enlargement of a decent image is usually invisible. A 4x enlargement of a 400 px supplier thumbnail will look plastic and over-smoothed in exactly the areas buyers scrutinise most.
The correct order of operations
Sequence matters more than tool choice. This order produces the best result from the same source file.
- Start from the largest original you have. Ask the supplier for the master file before you edit the thumbnail off their website. This one step solves more problems than every technique below combined.
- Remove noise and compression artefacts. Do this first, at native size, so nothing gets amplified downstream.
- Correct exposure, white balance and colour. Tonal edits are cleaner before resampling.
- Upscale, if genuinely needed. One pass, modest factor.
- Crop and resize to the target dimensions. Square for most marketplace feeds.
- Sharpen last, for output. Sharpening is resolution-dependent, so it must follow the final resize.
- Export once to JPEG. Quality 80-85 is the usual sweet spot. Keep the edited master as PNG or TIFF and re-export from it whenever you need another size.
Sharpening without wrecking the image
Output sharpening should be almost invisible on its own, and only apparent when you toggle it off. The failure signs are bright halos along contrast edges, crunchy speckling in shadow areas, and background gradients that suddenly show texture. If you see any of those, reduce the amount and the radius. On a 2,000 px product image, a small radius with moderate strength beats a large radius every time. Sharpening a genuinely out-of-focus image simply produces a crisp-looking blur, so treat it as a finishing step, never as a rescue.
When to stop editing and reshoot
Editing time is not free. Use these thresholds to make the call quickly.
- Reshoot if there is directional motion blur, if the source is below roughly 800 px on the longest side for a product where detail sells, if packaging text or a logo must be legible, or if the item is glossy or reflective, where invented detail looks obviously wrong.
- Edit if the image is sharp but small, if the only fault is compression damage in flat areas, or if the product is a simple shape with regular texture.
- Rule of thumb: if you have spent more than fifteen minutes on one image and it still fails at 100 per cent zoom, a phone on a tripod near a window will beat it in five.
One further point for 2026: several marketplaces now expect disclosure when imagery is materially AI-generated. Routine upscaling and sharpening of a real photograph is ordinary post-production, not generation. But if an upscaler has invented product detail that was never in the original, you have crossed a line that is both a policy risk and a returns risk.
Practical checklist
- Inspect at 100 per cent zoom before deciding anything
- Identify which of the four faults you have, and reshoot the motion-blurred ones
- Request the supplier's master file rather than editing a website thumbnail
- Denoise and clean artefacts before any enlargement

- Keep a lossless master and re-export sizes from it, never from a JPEG
- Check the output at thumbnail size too, because that is where the click is won
Most blurry-listing problems are not editing problems at all. They are archive problems: the good file existed once, and someone saved a small JPEG over it. Fix the workflow that produces your masters, and the rescue work largely disappears.
