Every year the question gets louder: why pay for a studio shoot when a 3D artist can build your product once and render it from any angle, in any colourway, forever? In 2026 the maths has genuinely shifted. Rendering costs have fallen, marketplace tolerance for photorealistic CGI has grown, and 3D assets now do double duty as augmented-reality viewers on your product page.
But CGI is not a universal replacement for a camera. It wins decisively in some categories and loses badly in others, and getting it wrong can cost you a suppressed listing. Here is the practical breakdown for sellers who need images live this month, not a research project.
What a 3D render actually is
A render starts with a 3D model: a digital mesh of your product, wrapped in materials that describe how each surface reflects light. An artist then places virtual lights and a virtual camera and the software calculates the resulting image. The output is an ordinary JPG, PNG or WebP file that uploads to Shopee, Lazada, Amazon or Shopify exactly like a photograph.
The important distinction is that a render is not an AI-generated image. AI image tools invent plausible pixels from a text prompt and have no idea what your product measures. A 3D model is built from your CAD files, technical drawings or physical measurements, so the proportions are correct by construction. That difference matters enormously for marketplace compliance, because the rule almost everywhere is accuracy, not medium.

eBay
eBay has no clause naming AI or CGI specifically, and its user agreement puts responsibility for listing accuracy on the seller. AI editing and generated backgrounds are permitted.
